AProf. Jeff Garrett
AProf. Jeffrey Garrett graduated from Otago University Medical School in 1976. He undertook his postgraduate study in both internal medicine and respiratory medicine in Auckland and London and has held a Clinical Associate Professorship since 2000. He is the Clinical Director of Medicine at Middlemore Hospital (2001- ) and was previously the Clinical Director of Respiratory Services at Green Lane Hospital from 1992-2000 and established Lung Transplantation at Green Lane Hospital in 1991.
He wrote the TSANZ Standards of Care published on the New Zealand Ministry of Health website in 2004. He has been an active researcher, predominantly in asthma, for more than 20 years with 60 publications in international journals. His current research interests are around the evolution of new therapies in bronchiectasis and COPD and in taking inflammometry (induced sputum and eNO) from the research lab and into clinical practice. He is trained in all aspects of respiratory medicine but has particular expertise in asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, chronic cough and lung cancer.
He also undertakes reviews for the Health and Disability Commissioner and has expertise in writing and presenting medicolegal reports. He has maintained a small private practice since 1988 and joined the NZSRI group in 2010.
Dr. Stuart Jones
Dr. Stuart Jones MBChB (Otago 1995), PhD (Otago 2003), FRACP (2007)
Dr. Stuart Jones originates from the Far North, however headed to the far south attending Otago Medical School from which he graduated in 1995. He spent his initial post-graduate years working at Dunedin Hospital before taking up a post as respiratory research fellow at the Dunedin School of Medicine. In 2003 he graduated with a PhD from Otago University with a thesis entitled: Exhaled nitric oxide and the clinical control of airway inflammation.
He commenced his respiratory specialist training in Dunedin before heading to the UK for a further 3 years of training. During his time in the UK he was based in Cambridge where he worked at the local university hospital (Addenbrookes) and at Papworth Hospital, a specialist cardio-respiratory unit. While at Papworth he trained in pulmonary hypertension and sleep medicine. He then went to Edinburgh where he worked as a sleep fellow at the Royal Infirmary.
He is currently employed as a respiratory and general physician at Middlemore Hospital. He specialises in general respiratory medicine, with a particular interest in sleep medicine, asthma and airway inflammation, and pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Christopher Lewis
Dr. Chris Lewis graduated from Manchester University medical school in 1996. He completed his basic medical training in north-west England, before moving to NZ to become research fellow at Green Lane Hospital in 2000.
His research examined the use of supplemental oxygen therapy during sleep and for breathlessness in COPD. He subsequently completed advanced training in Thoracic and Sleep Medicine at Auckland City Hospital, before returning to the UK to complete subspecialist training at Papworth Hospital, a specialist cardiothoracic unit.
At Papworth he undertook attachments specializing in lung cancer (including training in interventional bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound – EBUS); lung transplantation; and cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease. Since October 2006, Chris has worked as a specialist for the respiratory service at Auckland District Health Board.
Dr. Mark O'Carroll
Dr. Mark O’Carroll graduated from Auckland Medical School in 1996 and undertook his initial training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Green Lane Hospital before working as the Cystic Fibrosis Fellow at the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, Australia.
He now works as a Respiratory Physician at Auckland City Hospital and the Green Lane Clinical Centre as a general Respiratory Physician with a special interest in Cystic Fibrosis, Lung Transplantation, airway disease (particularly Bronchiectasis), Tuberculosis and Interventional Bronchoscopy.
He is proficient at bronchoscopy including intervention and use of endobronchial ultrasound. He has an interest in medical education and has been the Director of Physician Education at Auckland City Hospital since 2003 and a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Specialist Advisory Committee in Sleep and Respiratory Medicine since 2004.
Dr. Conor O'Dochartaigh
Dr. Conor O'Dochartaigh MD, MRCP(UK), FRACP graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway medical school in 1993, and carried out most of his postgraduate medical training in Ireland. Much of his subspecialist training in Respiratory Medicine was completed in Belfast, and this included time spent carrying out Pulmonary and Exercise Physiology research at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, leading to completion of a thesis for the degree of MD.
He obtained Specialist Certification in Respiratory Medicine and Internal Medicine (CCST-UK) in the UK in 2004. Conor also trained in Auckland for a year with the Greenlane Respiratory service in 2004. He returned to Ireland to work as a Consultant Respiratory Physician, before moving back to New Zealand in 2006 to take up a post as Consultant Respiratory Physician at Middlemore Hospital. He also has a role in teaching Medical Students as Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Auckland.
Conor has been in Private Practice with the NZRSI group since 2007. Special Interests include Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, Respiratory and exercise physiology, as well as all aspects of general Respiratory Medicine.
Dr Greg Reynolds - Somnodontist
Born in Christchurch, Dr Greg Reynolds BDS DipBus MScMed(Sleep Med) MMedSc graduated from the University of Otago Dental School in 1979, before embarking on several years' practice in Zimbabwe, South Africa and London. Returning to New Zealand in 1986, he operated dental practices in Christchurch and the West Coast.
Having developed a personal interest in sleep-disordered breathing, Dr. Reynolds' career in sleep medicine began at the Sleep Disorders Center in Shreveport, at Louisiana State University in 2000. Following six years of full-time study and research, he graduated with Masters degrees from both the University of Otago and the University of Sydney in 2006. His research theses on oral appliance treatment provided the foundation for his experience in the field of dental sleep medicine, Somnodontics™ and the ongoing development of the SomnoSplint™ programme.
Greg's clinical practice is focused on the non-surgical treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, using special dental appliances that open and stabilize the upper airway.
Dr. Andrew Veale
Dr. Andy Veale graduated from Otago University Medical School in 1979, having first completed a BSc in Biochemistry and Microbiology. He undertook his basic medical training in Auckland before undertaking advanced training in Internal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and Sleep Medicine. Further specialised training in Interventional bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy and Pulmonary Physiology followed.
He was involved (with others) in establishing the first Polysomnography Sleep Laboratory at Greenlane Hospital 20 years ago. He established the first private Sleep Laboratory and Pulmonary Physiology in NZ at Mercy Hospital. Due to increased growth, and the increase in public contracting, the NZ Respiratory & Sleep Institute was opened in a purpose designed facility in Greenlane.
He has had a longstanding interest in physiology which married well with an interest in Diving & Hyperbaric Medicine. He has been able to further this with a period in the RNZVR as Surgeon Lieutenant Commander (now retired) and remains a consultant to the RNZN. He holds the Diploma in Diving & Hyperbaric Medicine.
Currently he works half time at Middlemore Hospital and half time at the Institute.
Dr. Kenneth Whyte
Dr. Ken Whyte graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School in 1977 and trained in Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology in Glasgow completing his MD in Clinical Pharmacology. He was Lecturer in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Respiratory Medicine, University of Edinburgh.
Following Consultant posts in Scotland he emigrated to New Zealand in 1995 where he took up a position in Respiratory Medicine at Greenlane Hospital and subsequently at Auckland City Hospital. He has been Clinical Director of the Sleep Disordered Breathing and Ventilation Service, Clinical Director of Respiratory Service and Pulmonary Vascular Disease Service within Auckland. In addition he has been the longest serving of the Transplant Physicians in the NZ Pulmonary Transplant Service.
Dr. Elaine Yap
Dr. Elaine Yap BHB, MBChB, FRACP graduated from the Auckland University Medical School in 1997. She completed her specialist training in Thoracic and Sleep Medicine in Auckland. She currently holds a specialist position in Respiratory and Internal Medicine at Middlemore Hospital and is proficient in all aspects of Respiratory Medicine including bronchoscopy, pleural interventions and lung function testing.
Elaine has a special interest in airways disease, cough and pleural disease and also has some research background in pleural disease and asthma (examining the use of exhaled nitric oxide, induced sputum and CT in asthma).
