NZ Respiratory & Sleep Institute

The NZ Respiratory & Sleep Institute opened in April 2009 at Ascot Office Park in Greenlane, Auckland. Previously known as Auckland Physiology, we are a private specialist medical practice providing respiratory and sleep clinical consultation, lung function testing and sleep testing as well as undertaking clinical research.

Our consultation practice consists of nine specialist respiratory and sleep physicians, undertaking respiratory & sleep clinics on most days or evenings of the working week. We also provide a fortnightly sleep consultation clinic in Hamilton making access to people in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions easier. Urgent advice is available every day and urgent visits can be accommodated.

Our lung function laboratory undertakes a variety of lung function testing including spirometry, challenge tests, pre-operative assessment, detailed pulmonary physiology, FeNO, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. We have a special interest in disability assessment, fitness assessment, and assessment of chronic cough with induced sputum for cell type and cytology, and expired nitric oxide (FENO).

We are able to use induced sputum on 3 successive days to exclude active TB in patients undergoing immigration assessments.

We are a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider

Our six-bed purpose built sleep laboratory is the only private sleep laboratory of its kind in Auckland. We undertake in-house sleep studies on Wednesday and Thursday nights each week in order to establish diagnoses and/or initiate treatment in patients with sleep disorders. In addition we provide home-based sleep studies using portable equipment. We also have a Hamilton branch of our sleep service undertaking home-based sleep studies for patients in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty area.

CPAP equipment sales are offered through both our Auckland and Hamilton branches. A web based purchasing system is under development. Most CPAP supplies are stocked, or can be obtained at relatively short notice if required.

Our Clinical Trials Unit undertake trials of new medicines for respiratory conditions (Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis etc) and sleep conditions (Narcolepsy, Restless leg syndrome, Insomnia) as well as undertake device based research in patients with sleep apnoea. We maintain a database of people who are interested in research now or in the future.

We believe that the key to quality research is having well-trained clinical professionals together with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

Our study participants are well-informed and treated with exceptional care and friendliness.
